TRINITY BASIN PREPARATORY, DALLAS YOUTH SPORTS, AND HUNGER BUSTERS WORK TO CURB FOOD INSECURITY THROUGH MEAL DISTRIBUTION EFFORTS IN DALLAS’ OAK CLIFF NEIGHBORHOOD
(Dallas, Texas – Mar. 29) – Parents and community members around Trinity Basin Preparatory’s (TBP) Ledbetter Campus in Dallas and families involved in Dallas Youth Sports (DYS) are queuing up Tuesday to receive 2,000 boxes of meals provided through a partnership with Hunger Busters. The boxes contain perishable and non-perishable food items large enough to feed a family of 4-5. The event is taking place on Mar. 30 between 10am and 2pm, or until boxes run out, at 2524 W Ledbetter Dr., Dallas, TX 75233.
TBP is a district of free public charter schools with seven campuses throughout DFW, serving over 4,200 students. The Ledbetter campus serves 460 PK-3 through 8th grade students in the Oak Cliff neighborhood, where residents of the community have an average income below $28,000 per year. As a district, 90.1% of TBP students come from economically disadvantaged families, 60.6% are English Language Learners, and 73.7% are classified by the Texas Education Agency as “at-risk”.
“Trinity Basin Preparatory is always looking for ways to do more for our students and our community,” TBP’s Chief Development Officer Brandon Duck said. “We are grateful to partner with other local non-profits like Dallas Youth Sports and Hunger Busters to host food distribution events and help those in our community who need food.”
This is the second such food distribution organized in coordination between TBP, DYS, and Hunger Busters. On Friday, February 26, the Hunger Busters team, in partnership with DYS volunteers, provided 1,000 meals of perishable and non-perishable food items large enough to feed a family of 4-5.
“In everyday life, even before COVID-19, people in our community need help to feed their kids,” DYS Director J.R. Huerta said. “Dallas Youth Sports is a part of this community, and we are invested in the health and well-being of our athletes. Our partners at Trinity Basin Preparatory worked to feed kids all summer long even if they were not in school because a good meal creates good students. Thus, joining Hunger Busters in this effort is a natural partnership for these three nonprofits.”
Hunger Busters has been a partner with DYS for the past three years and, due to recent federal grant funding, is now working to set up bi-weekly or monthly food distribution events.
“Serving is something that should come natural to everyone, regardless of how we look or where we are from,” Hunger Busters’ Vice President of Development Latame Phillips said. , “I am proud to able to serve and partner with an another great organization like DYS to team up and serve the people of our communities.
